Our growing print process team is a mix of mechanical, thermal, systems, and software engineers. We are the mad scientists that develop and maintain the Formlabs printing process. Our team works closely with other engineering teams to research and develop Formlabs next generation printers and materials. We use engineering, physics, and experimentation to turn free-flowing powder into beautiful and accurate parts.

Internship Term: Summer/Fall 2022 (July-December) or Fall 2022 (September-December)
Commitment: Full-time
Location: Onsite in Somerville, MA
Application Requirements: Portfolio recommended

The Job:

  • Design, build, and analyze new 3D printing techniques - from developing new printer architectures to validating thermal effects of print geometries.
  • Work across teams to help optimize thermal-fluid designs, from the component level to the entire printer.
  • Use analytical models to assess new concepts and design modifications.
  • Perform experiments to validate printer performance, from thermal measurements to overall part quality.
  • Tackle complex and open-ended problems across multiple engineering disciplines.

You:

  • Are willing to question assumptions and back it up with data
  • Are able to work independently to research
  • Have experience with experiment design and data analysis
  • Have a solid foundation in heat transfer and fluid mechanics, along with some experience performing finite element analysis (COMSOL a plus)
  • Understand programming and scientific computing, ideally Python
  • Are familiar with basic CAD modeling (Solidworks/OnShape/OpenScad a plus)
  • Are pursuing a B.S., M.S., or PhD in an engineering field (all are welcome)
